Who are the people in the film industry which have had an influence in the way you make films today?
I’m sure people that know me would say Robert Rodriguez is the biggest influence on my life. They’re probably right, but also there have been other filmmakers that have made very large impacts over the years as I have grown as a filmmaker. Rodriguez definitely fueled my fire to get off my ass and do what I want to do. But Rodriguez’s style has always differed from mine, so I can’t exactly say he is the biggest influence. Michael Mann, Tarantino, Takeshi Kitano, Steven Soderbergh, Kevin Smith, Martin Scorcese, David Fincher and Alejandro Gonzalez-Iñarritu have all affected the way I see filmmaking, whether the effect is visual or auditory.
Why do you make films?
I make films because since high school I’ve had an interest in a variety of creative arts, such as writing, music, poetry, and I found out that films and making films was the perfect vehicle to bring al these things together and make something great. When I think of working as a filmmaker it just makes sense. It’s the only thing that I think I can do effortlessly and be completely happy 100% if the time.
What advice would you like to give other filmmakers?
The biggest thing that people do is hesitate. I’m not one to give advice, but if I had to I would say, Just get out there and do it, that’s the only way your gonna really learn.
